I offer manuscript editorial services of all kinds. I am most familiar with middle grade and young adult literature (of all genres) and any sort of fantasy fiction (for all age groups)–for examples of what I tend to prefer, visit the About tab or my Goodreads page. Regardless, if you think your work could benefit from my services, please don’t hesitate to contact me!
I charge by word, so all payment is made upfront via Paypal once your manuscript has been booked and I have received it via email; I will send you an invoice for the total cost as soon as this occurs, and I will begin editing once payment has been received. All prices are quoted in U.S. dollars. The listed rate is for one round, or pass, which consists of my first read-through as well as (if necessary, depending on the level of editing chosen) a look at the manuscript once you have accepted or denied the suggested revisions, in order for you to clarify any questions I might have.
Should substantial rewrites be made that require additional editing, or should you want any further edits of a different style, additional fees will be charged. In this case, a discount of $1/1000 words will be counted toward the combined price total; for example, should you want both developmental editing and copy editing, instead of paying a combination of $11.50/1000 words ($5.25/1000 words for developmental editing and $6.25/1000 words for copy editing), you would pay $10.50/1000 words.
Note: My services do not guarantee publication, but I can promise to give you my honest opinion and the best feedback I can. I also reserve the right to raise my rates; any changes will be announced publicly on this page.
I am happy to provide a free sample edit of up to 10 double-spaced pages or 1 chapter (whichever is shorter, with the text in 12-pt. font with 1-inch margins) in order for you to determine whether you’d like to move forward with me. Samples and full manuscripts should be emailed to me (at the address you will receive after initial contact has been vetted through the form) in Microsoft Word .doc or .docx format–and please clearly label your chapters and number your pages!
If you just want another set of eyes on the manuscript to give you a general overview, this is your best option. I’ll read through the draft and give you feedback in the form of a short edit letter noting my favorite parts as well as areas of concern, which will also be highlighted in the manuscript using Microsoft Word’s “Comments” feature. For this service, I charge $.00325/word, which becomes $3.25 for every 1000 words
This is like a more in-depth version of the reader’s report. I’ll focus on big-picture issues like plot, structure, pacing, character arc and development, point of view, voice, worldbuilding, etc. You’ll receive specific comments in the manuscript using Microsoft Word’s “Comments” feature as well as a detailed edit letter outlining how the above elements present themselves within the manuscript as a whole. For this service, I charge $.00525/word, which becomes $5.25 for every 1000 words.
If developmental editing is about the art of writing, then substantive editing, or line editing, is about the craft. I’ll go through the manuscript line by line and look at your word choice, how many adverbs are used (which end up passively telling instead of actively showing what’s happening, particularly in dialogue tags), awkward phrasing, sentence structure, repetition and redundancy, etc. Your feedback will consist of an annotated manuscript (using Microsoft Word’s “Track Changes” and “Comments” features) as well as an edit letter noting your general tendencies so that you know what to watch out for. For this service, I charge $.00575/word, which becomes $5.75 for every 1000 words.
Copy editing is all about consistency. I’ll make sure that the heroine’s eyes aren’t blue one chapter and brown the next, that names and terminology are always spelled the same way, that spelling/grammar/punctuation rules are always used (or deliberately broken!) in the same manner, and that logistics (in terms of time passing, movement, etc.) always make sense. Your feedback will be transferred directly into your manuscript via Microsoft Word’s “Track Changes” and “Comments” features, along with any queries I might have.
In lieu of an edit letter, I will provide you with the style sheet that I will create for reference, which will be comprised of descriptions of people/creatures/places/important items/etc., rudimentary maps, and lists of names, terminology, and any particular grammatical nuances; this document is especially useful if you’re planning a series, and if you choose to come back to me with future novels, it will be consulted and updated. I will also provide minor fact-checking in order to ensure that any research you may have done is accurate. For this service, I charge $.00625/word, which becomes $6.25 for every 1000 words.
Proofreading is the final step in the editorial process. I’ll read over your manuscript for typos, missed words, duplicate words, punctuation/capitalization/grammatical errors, misspellings, etc. If the manuscript has been copy edited, this will ensure that no new errors were introduced during that process. For this service, I charge $.00375/word, which becomes $3.75 for every 1000 words.
I’m so excited to work with you! Feel free to contact me about your work, and we’ll get started on booking your manuscript and setting up a timeline. Talk to you soon!
